Human Body Detectives Review and Giveaway!

10:50 PM Posted by Deanna

Did you know that children who understand their bodies and how they work are more apt to making healthier food and lifestyle choices? Well, according to Dr. Manley, a naturopathic doctor, this philosophy is one that she stands by and has done something to help us teach our kids about their bodies.

Human Body Detectives is a series of educational adventure stories where two young “Human Body Detectives,” Merrin and Pearl, magically enter different systems in the body to solve a health mystery. Through action-packed fiction stories, listeners learn how the various systems work and what foods best fuel each system.

The audio book series is authored by Dr. Heather Manley, a naturopathic doctor based in Hawaii who noticed a void of children’s books that focused on the different systems of the body in a fun, interactive and engaging way. Her first book in the series titled The Lucky Escape came about when she realized kids would be more inclined to make healthier food choices if they understood how the food they ate affects their body. The main characters of the book are based on author her daughters of the same name, Merrin and Pearl. Her second book Battle with the Bugs will release October 26th and is a great way to discuss influenza and its impact with your children in a non-threatening format.

I received a copy of "The Lucky Escape", where Merrin and Pearl are on an amazing adventure through the digestive system of their little brother Robbie on a search for a swallowed penny. Their task was to find the penny, save Robbie and make an escape from his poopy diaper!

I am so amazed with the quality of this story. It is amazing fun and MJ absolutely loved hearing about a little boy who swallowed a penny! He is almost 3, so it surprised me just how much he understood. He has heard about germs, bacteria, and the process of food from the mouth on down to the bowels, so it is great that he is able to see and further understand just what all of that talk means. This is definitely a fun and innovative way for kids to learn about the functions of the body.

I actually learned a few things myself... I didn't know that there is a name for the valve, the epiglottis, that makes sure that the food goes down the espohagus rather than the windpipe [my epiglittis has failed me a time or two this month]. Also, once food is chewed up and broken down, it is then called bolus. Cool.

BUY IT: The Human Body Detectives series can be purchased directly through their website for only $19.95. Each set comes with the CD Rom, a 24 page workbook, an audio cd, and 2 full color pages of stickers. Choose from The Lucky Escape, The Battle with the Bugs, and in early 2010, The Heart Pumping Adventure. You children can become one of Dr. Heather's healthy kids!

WIN IT: Dr. Heather Manley has generously offered one family the chance to teach their children about their bodies for free! She is giving away a copy of the Human Body Detectives: The Lucky Escape, to one of Mommygaga's lucky readers.

There are very few books out there promoting kids’ health in a fun way, and none designed to teach kids about health by focusing on the specific body systems.
