New Bloggers: Why Nobody Is Reading Your Blog Posts

You've started a new blog, but nobody cares... I kinda felt this way a year ago when I jumped into the blogosphere, having no idea what I was getting myself into. There were hundreds of Mommy Bloggers who had been doing this long before me and I felt a little intimidated. I wrote and wrote and damn near begged for people to come by and check out my blog. A few people have asked how to get more traffic and how to get people to read your blog. Well, newbies, it takes time. Here are a couple of possible reasons that your posts may be unpopular:

Lack of Compelling Content- I personally think that good, original content is one of the most important factors in assesing readership. Who wants to read the same thing they have already read 5 times over on other blogs? People love new and exciting content, so dump those posts that you got off of a free article website and write something to wow your to-be-readers.

No Blogging Relationships- The second most important factor in gaining readers is support from other bloggers, especially the ones who have been around the block a few times. If you keep to yourself, it's pretty hard to form relationships. Get out there and comment, introduce yourself and make yourself known! I think that being a selfless and positive person says a lot and will all come back to you in the form of not just loyal readers, but traffic, comments on your posts, other bloggers writing about you, advertising opportunities, and best of all, online friends.

Miniscule Web Presence- So you've written a great post that fits your niche perfectly, yet no hits? Does anyone actually know that your blog exists? Do you take advantage of Social Media to promote your blog? Have you submitted your blog to any directories? Have you optimized your search engine keywords and tags? If not, get started!

Off Niche Topic Posts- Mommygaga is a personal mommy blog written by a real momma, ME! I write about my balance between life and work at home and share all other fun things that mommies care about. Could you imagine if I wrote a post about changing your own oil, or how to pick a Fantasy Football team? Most of my readers are not here for that kind of content. Stay on topic.

Your Expecting Too Much- You may think that your readership level should be higher than it is, but in reality, it takes a long time to build a following. The more you blog, the more people will come across it. If you just started blogging in September and you think you should have thousands of followers by November, let me be the one to bust your bubble.

Other Little Stuff- Grammatical errors, negative posts, and over advertising are sometimes turn offs.

I kinda learned all of this the hard way, so I thought I would share with my readers who are interested in blogging or having any type of online website [most of the same rules would still apply]. Have patience and be a super writer! It will all pay off in the long run.

Thank you for the tips. I started in July and am still trying to get it all figured out.

Agreed. As a reader/follower, my biggest issues are grammar errors. I also have unsubscribed to the overly religious mommy blogs. Being overly religious is a way to very much isolate a portion of your audience.

Thanks for the dose of reality! I started blogging about 2 weeks ago, and am having a hard time understanding why no one is reading my posts! :) I'm kidding of course - I certainly don't expect a large readership at this stage of the game!

Excellent points - thanks for sharing them!

(Found you from Happy Housewife's comment section - and so glad I did!)

I’m thrilled to see that you could use my “mommy blogger” original photo in your post above.

Would you mind crediting the original source, please?
