    The holidays make me sing

"I'll be home for Christmas, just you wait and see...hmm,hmmm" I sing. The music reminds me of snow falling down and visits to granny's and the gifts I got at Great-Great Aunt's home and holiday dinners. Each song can evoke memories to pop into my heart and make me laugh and sigh with the warmth of the moment.

ohh, ohh, you are offering a gift for my whole family. Something for everyone. We can all share and enjoy. thank you.

Basket can be reused as a....lap tray or maybe a fruit bowl.

Thank you for offering a great gift. Thank you...someone will be very happy.

My family (including aunt/uncle/cousins) all volunteering on Xmas so that the homeless families all could have a great day - bussed in from the shelters to the school we set up at, with a craft table for kids, and mountains of food, and a "gift store" for "shopping" - all donated goods so that the parents could pick out clothes, toys, and other presents for a happy holiday with their loved ones. The kids could make gifts at the crafts table - photo frames out of popsicle sticks, etc, and interact and learn with the animal guy that came with snakes and frogs and rabbits and all. It was amazing.

I fondly remember being in the kitchen with my grandmother when I was very young. Every year at Christmas we would make marzipan by hand (before such things as food processors were invented). She was an artist and she would make the most beautiful marzipan fruit, painting them with edible food colouring and sprinkling them with sugar! We of course made our own, but grandma's were magical creations!

Whenever I hear the original Frosty the Snowman or Gene Autry sing Rodolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, it reminds me of laying on the floor next to the Christmas tree and listening to Christmas records when I was 4 or 5 years old. We didn't have a lot of ornaments so my parents hung sugar cookies that were store bought in bags on the tree. I got to eat the broken ones with hot chocolate.

My most memorable holiday is when my father came home from Vietnam. I was 6 years old and I hadn't seen my dad for some time. My brother and I were opening our gifts and there was a knock at the door. My mom asked my brother to get the door. My brother is 2 years older than me. He opened the door and there stood my dad. Apparently my mother knew he was coming. I remember jumping up and down and screaming at the top of my lungs. It still brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. He had a large bandage on his arm and I remember asking him about it. My father had been wounded. Anyway, I didn't mean to make this so long but it was truly my most memorable holiday. You can see my recent posting of my father here: http://fromthedogspointofview.blogspot.com/2009/11/on-this-veterans-day-for-my-father.html

The holiday season reminds me of going Christmas tree hunting at the Christmas tree farm! We'd take a hay ride out to where the trees are. Spend some time wandering around. Then, we'd cut it down and bring it back to the front of the farm. While my dad tied the tree to the roof of the car, I sipped on hot apple cider.
    bliss.

My favorite uncle was a merchant marine, so he wasn't always in the country at Christmas. When I was 7, he was, and he was spending Christmas Eve night sleeping on the sofa in our living room. My older brother talked me into sneaking into the living room to see what Santa had left us, and just as I made my way under the tree, my uncle made a noise. Not knowing about snoring, I thought he must be awake and so I hid under the tree for what seemed like hours. It was our last Christmas with my uncle so it's a bittersweet, but mostly funny, memory.
