Disney DIY Crafts for Kids The Best Party Ideas & Themes

DIY Cars Birthday Party Pennant Banner Decorations

My oldest turned 6 a few weeks back, I cannot believe how fast time is flying! We had a Disney Cars Movie themed party for him where he invited his closest friends to our house to watch Cars 2.

I wanted to be sure the house was all decked out with the race car theme, so as a part of the decor, I opted to do DIY party decorations and created a birthday party pennant banner. When you make your own birthday party decorations, they can be custom to fit the party’s theme and cost much less than store bought. This homemade race flag banner was a cute and inexpensive way to decorate in style!

How to make a birthday party pennant banner

You will need:

  • Patterned paper
  • Scissors
  • ribbon
  • hole punch
  • tape
  • an awesome 6 year old helper (optional)

paper cut into triangles to make pennants

I found a neat checkered pattern and Cars Lightning McQueen image online, so I fit it to page and printed a bunch of sheets out. I was able to get 2 pennants out of each 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper, landscape. The amounts of materials you need will vary on the length of your banner. For the black and white checkered banner on the mirror, I used 12 pennant triangles, or 6 pieces of paper. It was approximately 8 feet in length when strung.

Cut the triangle pennants

Grab your patterned sheets of paper, fold the paper in half backwards, hamburger style, and draw the lines on the back to make triangles from the top of one end to a point at the other end. You may want to use a ruler to ensure they are straight. Do NOT draw lines on the patterned side of the paper, they might show! Cut along the lines, discarding the outer paper scraps. You should now have 2 triangle pennants.

Punch holes in each pennant

Once you have all of the pennants you will use,  grab the hole punch and cut two holes evenly at the top of each triangle.

Thread the ribbon, tape and hang

string ribbon through holes on pennants

Unravel a lengthy piece of ribbon, keeping it attached to the spool, and begin threading the pennants onto it. Start going up from the back side, and down through the front hole on the other side. Make sure your pennants are evenly spread out along the ribbon. Once your pennant is in its place, put a small piece of tape on the back of the pennant to secure the ribbon. Do this for each pennant to be sure they will not slide out of place.

When you are finished, cut the ribbon from the spool, leaving a little slack so you can use it to hang. Put this bad boy up along a stair case, ceiling, or any fun place with a few balloons on each end and admire!

Homemade Disney Cars Pennant Party Banner

I love how each banner came out. I made two, one to use as the backdrop for the food and dessert table, and another to hang over the banister. Hope you love this DIY party decoration idea and your homemade pennant banner comes out great!
