Science Experiments for Kids: Testing Chemical Reaction With Mentos and Soda

We have been getting into some fun science experiments lately, my son has a science class at school that is fueling his excitement to hypothesize!

Diet Coke and Mentos Geyser Eruption Experiment

Testing reaction is fun stuff. We saw the explosion that is made when you drop Mentos into a 2-liter of Diet Coke, so we definitely had to try it!

How to make a Diet Coke + Mentos Geyser

You’ll need:

– Original Mentos

– A 2-Liter of Diet Coke

– optional: pipe and valve

soda and mentos geyser

The easiest way to do this is to drop the Mentos into a full bottle of Diet Coke and RUN! My husband decided that he’d get creative and do it the difficult way by adding pvc pipe and a valve to release all of the Mentos into the soda at once. We tried a few different sodas. The Diet Coke was the winner!

Check out the Mentos and Soda experiment video I put on YouTube, this time, we tried Diet A&W Root Beer…

How does it work?

According to Wikipedia,Ā “The numerous small pores on the candy’s surfaceĀ catalyzeĀ the release ofĀ carbon dioxideĀ (CO2) gas from the soda, resulting in the rapid expulsion of copious quantities ofĀ foam. TheĀ potassium benzoate,Ā aspartame, and CO2Ā gas contained in the Diet Coke, in combination with theĀ gelatinĀ andĀ gum arabicĀ ingredients of the Mentos, all contribute to the formation of the foam.”

Fun stuff! Stop by the store and grab some Mentos and Diet Coke, amuse your kids today!
