Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige Talks Producing Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Captain America, The Winter Soldier

Y’all know that the movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier is coming out this weekend, right? Well, I got a chance to watch an advanced screening, and it’s living up to the Marvel franchises amazing reputation!

It takes a lot to make a Marvel film, and this installment of Captain America was no different. When I was in LA, I got a chance to chat with the man behind the movie, President of Marvel Studios and Producer Kevin Feige. Here’s what he shared about the challenges and intentions, comic controversies, the addition of past Marvel characters, and the most exciting parts of this movie.

The biggest challenge when making a movie for the big screen from the original comics is making it understandable for everyone and adaptable to the comic at the same time. They didn’t want the movies to be sort of like a club, where you need to know the history and follow the comic series to know everything that’s going to happen. “We work very hard to make each of the movies feel like a stand-alone movie,  but at the same time connect in to — to everything else.” It has been Marvel’s mission statement since the beginning.

The decision to change the tone of the movie to make it a modern day setting was fueled by the need to make the same type of movie every time. They had to mix up the feel of it somehow, no redundant movies allowed so that viewers don’t lose interest. Since they portray Captain America in the modern world, they were able to “do the kind of action that we haven’t necessarily done before in our movies which is a ground base and visceral, you know, car chases and — and hand to hand combat.

The Filming of Captain America, The Winter Soldier

Marvel tends to bring older superheroes intentionally into their movies, they have such a rich history and the connection between the hero and the villain is there. A personal story is always a good way to introduce a villain, and the superheroes stories are new to a huge audience.

Feige was most excited about how the world reacted to the teaser, which leads the unique tome of the film. He’ s happy that people seem to be on board with it, even though it’s different. Also, Feige feels that each “Marvel Studio’s Movie needs to be unique, needs to feel like its own fresh entity but Guardians takes that to the extreme.” It seems like a fresh, original movie to him, where it’s based on a Marvel Comic Book for a newer audience who has no idea about the characters in the comic. Hopefully people will be just as responsive to that as well!

What’s next for Marvel and Feige? They are spending a lot of time now in the cutting room on “Guardians of the Galaxy” which comes out August 1st. They just released the teaser for it, and in about 2 weeks (from mid-March), Marvel starts filming “Avengers Age of Ultron”, that will be the next Movie up in May of 2015. In 10 weeks, they start filming “Ant-Man” with Michael Douglas and Paul Rudd, and that comes out in July of 2015. There are a number of things that the Marvel team is working on, but they gotta keep it on the low.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier, In Theaters April 4th!

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a great addition to the Marvel family of movies, if you are into action, adventure and light humor, this is a MUST-SEE! I would not recommend taking young children, as there are many fight scenes, explosions, shooting,  slight blood, bruising, and the like. I would say that a mature 10+ year old would be able to handle it. I also interviewed Chris Evans, who plays Captain America, hereCaptain America: The Winter Soldier will be in theaters April 4th!
