Sebastian Stan, a Romainan born actor, stars as the Bucky Barnes / The Winter Soldier in the newest Captain America movie. He has been acting since 2003 and is best known for his roles in The First Avenger and now this movie from the Marvel franchise.

Stan’s character in this movie presents a twist to the plot, known as the villain who is against Captain America. They happen to have a history together that you’ll have to see to believe. We got a chance to interview the Winter Soldier himself, and he had a lot to say about his role in the movie. Here are 5 facts about Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as told by Sebastian Stan:

5 Facts About The Role of The Winter Soldier in Captain America

1. Some aspects were difficult to transform from his previous role as Bucky Barnes into the Winter Soldier, and some were not. Bucky and Cap were allies prior to this film. “I would say no in the sense that everything is so spelled out for me in the comic books that I sort of feel like I have that to follow as a guide. Yes in that certain things from comic books often—don’t—they’re not so easily translated to the screen, and so there were things visually that were new that we had to discover about the character.” Things presented in the comics have to be translated on screen, so that was a challenge.

2. In the movie, The Winter Soldier wears a huge metal arm. Stan says that the training was difficult. “Some of the diet and the working out that was happening six months before we started shooting was really difficult at times. And then you’re learning to fight it’s basically just like going to dance class. I mean with the person and the thing is you just have to have patience, and it’s really hard, you might get it quickly and you’re excited, you see the stunt guys are just, you know, phenomenal and you just wanna jump in and do it but the whole thing has to be so planned out and detailed, and you can’t have a lot of room for errors because people can get hurt.”

3. Stan relates his preparation for the role to his step dad who is battling Alzheimer’s disease. The Winter Soldier actually doesn’t know who he really is, which is similar to what his step dad is going through in real life. “It was interesting because while that sort of process was very painful as an observer, I kind of—that was one of the things that I found to be very helpful for me to kind of observe as somebody going through Alzheimer’s. What their behavior is like and the way – because even though they don’t know certain things anymore, who they are per say, there is still that struggle within them to wanna try and kind of know things. They respond to certain uh things they see or sounds that they see, a song or something kinda triggers a memory, and so it’s a very weird internal battle.” I think he did a good job transferring that struggle into the movie.

4. Stan’s most memorable moment while filming was being able to work with the legendary Robert Redford. “That’s where I really remember sort of…telling myself you know just like be here, be present, you know, take him in, you know, on and off set, you know. On set it was like suddenly I was in a situation where the whole reason for me going to acting school and everything was sort of here I was with this man and he was being very generous as an actor with me even though he’s obviously who he is.“

5. Stan had a couple of favorite scenes that were cool to watch on the big screen. “I think any of the car chases are really great I felt, that was pretty cool. That whole sequence with Nick Fury, the one with the Winter Soldier also, those were great sequences.” Stan thought the movie was so different compared to other action movies because it seemed so realistic.
